Blue Bottle and Feather (photo collection)

Blue Bottle and Feather (photo collection)

I like doing photo sessions with found objects. I found this wonderful shade of blue bottle among the garbage that (unfortunately) litters the roadside and woods near my home. This day happened to be a great sunny day and the sun shining through this shade of blue was too much to pass up for a photograph. The equally wonderfully colored feather was found in my backyard among some small grey feathers. I am not sure to what bird this feather belongs (if anyone does, please let us know in the comment section. Thanks!), but I liked the contrast of the yellow and black against the blue bottle. I was only going to take a single photograph, but ended up turning the surprise session into a photo series and created this collection called “The Blue Bottle”. For some reason, this collection speaks a lot to me about civilization (think: litter, garbage, trash) and by no means says anything at all about alcohol or drinking in general (no hate mail, thank you). The combination of this feather (as well as the dandelion as seen in the other photos from the collection below in the gallery) seemed to contrast or contradict the otherwise apparent negative connotation of the dirty, littered blue bottle. What do you think? What does it say to you?

Pappy's work Boots

Pappy's Work Boots

How many recall fathers or grandfathers (sorry ladies) who have (or are) worked in mines? on the railroad? in steel mills? welders? the assembly line? Back when “working for a living” meant something? When it was “normal” for your father or your grandfather to head off to work in the morning with coffee in a thermos and lunch pail in hand, while “mom” prepared breakfast for soon-to-be waking children before school. Back when people knew what “an honest day’s work” meant. How many wish they can return to those “simpler” times? Back to when community was more important than making a buck, back when a dollar went a long way, back when there was a general store and a malt shop, and not a Wal-mart and a UniMart. Back when you could smell hot dogs on the grill with the baseball game on the television, kids playing in the backyard, mothers gossiping over phone lines (sorry ladies. :-) ). Things were different then. I think those times are what’s now known as Nostalgia. This series is about those times, “Pappy’s Work Boots” (and these really are Pappy’s work boots) all worn comfortable by long hours of grit, dirty hands, hard work…labor. But also, like that time, rusty and now almost forgotten, which is why Pappy’s work boots are captured with some old, rusted equipment, demonstrative of a time forgotten, but that had once been brand new.

I’ve uploaded some new photographs (this blog, The 26th Dimension will primarily be for photo series) over at my photo gallery on my website, Nicole Terry Creates, too. When you’re done walking down memory lane, take a look at my other photo gallery.

Would you believe that this is not a jungle but just grass and a small puddle?

Would you believe that this is not a jungle but just grass and a small puddle?

One of my favorite things to do with my Nikon camera, is to work with manual focusing and macro (I really love how I can choose what I want to focus on–sharpen–when I’m taking photos. I can bring attention to one particular object or action with this camera). I took this photo the day after there was a big rainstorm where I live. This puddle is in my backyard. I laid down flat in the grass (I love the smell of earth after a big rain) with my camera to capture this photo. I like the bright green coloring of the grass from the sun hitting it, and the little jewels of sunlight in the puddle. The whole things gives the illusion that the perspective is actually looking across  a small pond (well, it does to me, so there :-P ).  Anyway, the whole scene just makes me think of beauty. And it was fun lying in the grass!

These photos are what also came out of this session:

Next series uploaded to The 26th Dimension gallery will be “The Blue Bottle” or “Pappy’s Work Boots”. Check back soon for that.

It's NOT what's for dinner...

It's NOT what's for dinner...

I’ve probably said quite a few times how much I like my Nikon camera (a camera that does not cease to amaze me in what it can do, and that was given to me), so there is no need to say it again (except, that I just did!). Capturing this deer head (yes, the deer was dead, and yes, the head was detached from the body. Just thought you’d want to know…didn’t you?) was my first discovery of the focusing techniques in this camera. I like how I can focus on the head through the twigs and branches.

Might I just take a moment here and also comment on the smell associated with this deer head (and its remains): Uh, IT STANK! Very, very bad. In any case, I thought it made for a nice photo (sorry, PETA). Click on the thumbnail for a much larger view.

DISCLAIMER: I am an animal lover (what? I said it was NOT for dinner, didn’t I?), please do not send me any hate emails, thanks.

Sunset obscured by clouds

Sunset obscured by clouds

I captured this a few days ago as the sun was setting. I was waiting for the clouds to move from in front of the sun, but ended up liking the photos with the clouds obscuring the sunset (that may have also been because I grew tired of waiting, and just took what I could get!).  I love to look up at the sky (and will be learning how to photograph the night sky very soon). The happy, little accident in this photo are the bird nests that can be seen at the top of the tree in the center of the right side of the photo.  Click on the photo for a much larger view.

I will be uploading more of these.

Contemplating the mysteries of life

Contemplating the mysteries of life

This is one of my favorite photos that I have captured to date. The “awwwww” factor is off the scale! :-) I also love the happy, little accident of the reflection of the backyard and sky in his eye. Click on the image for much larger view.
